The small beach on the west side of the island, Cleopatra’s beach, received its name from an interesting tale. It is believed that Cleopatra herself took up residence on the island, and one of her many extravagant gestures was to have galleys of sand shipped from North Africa to create the beach for her lover, Antony, to sunbathe on. Amongst the olive trees there are romantically situated ruins where the may have spent time together.
